Monsignor Fulton J. Sheen addresses the crisis of Jews and Christians abandoning their divine vocations, leading to persecution by Nazi and Communist forces. He argues that both groups share a common destiny and must return to faithful worship of God to combat the anti-God forces of the modern world.
Catholics should practice daily holy hour, mass, and communion while recognizing their shared persecution and destiny with faithful Jews under anti-God regimes.
Protestant ministerial disbelief in scriptural inspiration; Denial of baptismal necessity; Rejection of bodily resurrection; Denial of Christ's divinity and redemption; Secular humanism without God; Nazi racial messianism; Communist brotherhood without divine fatherhood
The necessity of faithful adherence to divine vocations, the importance of daily mass and holy communion, and the recognition that both Jews and Christians have God-given missions that secular forces seek to destroy and pervert.

Oh, the way green ponds and flowers get As soon as they infest the freshness of the nation Spreading the ponds to our capacity to weigh Muns senior Fulton J. Sheen of the Catholic University of America will now deliver the sixteenth in his series of eighteen addresses on the crisis in Christendom. His discourse today is entitled, The Jew and Christian in History. I present Muns senior Sheen. Friends. The two greatest vocations ever given to any people by God, were given to Jews and Christians. The vocation of the Jew was the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises. The vocation of the Christian was to establish the brotherhood of man Under the fatherhood of God in the unity of the Spirit, one body, one spirit, one lord, one faith, and one baptism. We must not allow individual defections from this unity to blur the picture. Whether individual Jews ignore the God of their fathers, or whether individual Christians live as if Christ had never died for their sins, does not alter the facts that there is in each instance a communal vocation, a divine mission encroasted to a people and to a kingdom. The Jew he said was given the vocation to be the chosen people announcing the law of God. The Christian was given the vocation of establishing the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God. This brings us to a question. Have the Jews and have the Christians been faithful to their vocation? First the Jews. There is a vast number who still are a devout God fearing and God loving people. But the spiritual condition of many Jews throughout the world today is sad. I say spiritual condition for that is more serious than even their political condition. Very distinguished rabbis have told me that only one out of ten Jews attend the synagogue, either liberal or orthodox. Some of their most distinguished fellows have repudiated all connections between Judaism and God. Ludwig Lewis and Well-knowing and the Zionist movement says, the Jew need believe nothing to be a Jew. And Albert Einstein proclaims disbelief in a personal God, fearing homage to a cosmic religion rather than to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Lewis the Brandeis confessed in his own words that he had never gone to a synagogue. Through all who have the interest of God and immortal souls at heart, this condition is regrettable. And on the other hand, how many Christians are living up to their vocation? A survey made by a professor of Northwestern University into the belief of 700 ministers and theological students in an around Chicago representing 20 denominations, revealed that 43% disbelieved in the inspiration of sacred scripture. Though 400 years ago, that was the basic article of their faith. 51% disbelieved in the necessity of baptism. 69% disbelieved in the resurrection of the body. 52% denied that Christ would come again to Jews are living on the dead. 61% denied the redemption of Christ on the cross, and 37% denied the divinity of Christ. Suppose the same proportion of Americans disbelieved in the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of the United States. What think ye would be the condition of democracy? How many so-called Christians in the United States who are listening to me right now can recall the third commandment? And how many in my radio audience today joined our fellow man in the worship of God? These conditions are regrettable too. In order to bring home the awful consequences of this vocation failure among Jews and Christians, look to its social effects in the contemporary world. Before our eyes there is being fulfilled the terrible warning. The kingdom of God shall be taken from you. Come so it has. By the Nazis and by the communists. Hitler in his vanity against all religion has in so many words said to the Jews, you have had a vocation. The vocation to announce and preserve the knowledge of the law of God and to await as a chosen people the fulfillment of the promise given to you by God. But Hitler continues as you have forgotten it, or abandoned it. And so I shall take that empty shell of your past, created by your own apostasy. And I shall empty its further if its divine content. I shall prostitute it, secularize it, propane it, just a credit. I shall substitute the idea of the German race in place of the race of God and the German mission in place of the divine mission. This shall be the messianism of the twentieth century. And the communism on the other hand says to the Christians, you spiritual errors of the Jews, you too had a vocation. The vocation to preserve the brotherhood of men under the fatherhood of God and the headship of Christ, you have repudiated your Christ and your need of redemption and your oneness in the spirit, you have failed this opposed vocation and it has failed you. But we shall take it up. Empty it of its Christian content, desecrated, perverted, hardened it, and substitute the commoner's ship of violence for the brotherhood of love and unite society on the basis of class hatred instead of universal love of man in Christ. And this shall be the brotherhood of the twentieth century. Just as the French Revolutionist once prostitute at the altar of Notre Dame, by enshroning on it, courtesan was the goddess of reason. So now these pseudo religions and false mysticisms empty the people of God of God and the brotherhood of Christ of Christ and give to the world its anti-Semitic and anti-Christian Naziism and Communism. As we supply the japs with steel which they convert it into bullets to turn against us, so to have Naziism and Communism melted down the steel of two great vocations and made them instruments of persecution, of slavery, and of world disorder. And thus the very ideas that were meant to be the channel of salvation for souls have become source for the pollution of the world. But they would not have so overflowed modern history if we Jews and Christians had been a little more faithful to the mission given to us by God. Nazism and Communism in certain states are the punishments on the Jews for failing to be faithful Jews and on Christians for failing to be faithful Christians. Both of them have forgotten the rock from which they were used, the thousand of living waters from which they sprang, and both have provided the instruments of the world's apostasy. For that reason, not many of them in Communism are in their essence, not the resurrection of primitive barbarisms, they are worse, they are the perversions of the spirit due to the abandonment of faith in God. Jews and Christians alike are being persecuted for the very ideas they either rejected or forgot. Never before in he the history of the world has there been such a persecution of Jews and Christians. And there is just as much anti-Semitism as there is anti-Christianity. And there is just as much a hatred of Christians as there is a hatred of Jews. This should be to us as time that we have entered into an apocalyptic period of history, drinking as we are from a common chalice of misery means that we have a common destiny. In this new era of the world into which we are entering, there will be no persecution of the ones without the persecution of the others. We are and we will continue to be persecuted together, because the spirit of the world is not non-religious or indifferent to religion or secularist or humanist. It is anti-God. That means that all those who have any relation with God in their collective capacity will be persecuted. To not see as a man to communism, the Jews and the Christians alike are demons. If the world hates the Jews and hates the Christians, it is because by vocation they are both outsiders to the spirit of anti-God. Regardless of how many faceless Jews or faceless Christians join their eyes. There is a natural discontent in anyone who has a mission from God. Whether he be faithful to that mission or not, he does not alter the fact. The anti-God world hates us because we have been God's summoned. And that is sufficient to inspire a persecution. To Jews and Christians both possess a revolutionary character, they are in the world, but not of it. Since God gave them a work to do, they are both alien, a firmament, a leaven, forever disturbing the slumber of an anti-religious world. And that anti-God world will be touched neither by the finger of Abraham, nor by the finger of Christ. Neither by the historical mission of Israel in time, nor by the healing mission of the cross for eternity. Yet will have the new city of man make war against the city of God until the transformation of the world. It has told us under now we must trick in fear from its faults. The name of God's. Let all the Jews stop talking about anti-Semitic persecutions. Let all the Christians stop talking about anti-Christian persecutions as if the three could be cut down without affecting both the root and the branch. Oppositions with the persecution of the Jews is and ought to be a Christian cause. That is the way it is in Paris, where the Catholic auxiliary bishop wears a five-pointed star of David on his sleeve in protest against the way the Jews are treated. Oppositions with the persecution of the Christians in light manner is and ought to be a Jewish cause. That it is with the Dutch Jews who make their defense today synonymous with Christianity. The solution of the problem of the persecution of Jews and Christians therefore is not along the lines of good fellowship. So-called tyrants meetings slap on the back humanism which never mentions religion. Rather does the solution lie in these great votations, snatching back from Nazism and Communism, the ideas of the chosen people and their brotherhood of man and infusing them once again with the spirit of God onto the regeneration of the world already reeling on the abyss of a great disaster. Take back from Nazism the idea of the elect of God and steal back from coming as in the idea of the brotherhood of man, revitalize them with a natural law and divine revelation and build in you in a decent world where a Jew and a Christian can live together because God's righteousness and peace reigns. The Jews and the Christians are being driven together by the anti-God forces of the world. And hence the Jew will look in vain for peace. In any secularized messianism or prostitute a kingdom of God in some distant future here below and is earth. And the Christians will find only chaos in a humanism that attempts to make men brothers without recognizing a common father. About the only basis of unity between Jews and Christians now is they both hate Hitler. It might be a good idea to get together on a new basis, loving the same God. And that is why every Sunday that I have been talking I have been emphasizing the necessity of a daily holy hour of prayer and meditation. May all the Jews and the Christians of this country set aside in our day to live close to their God with a stake in victory for our country. In peace with one another. And Catholics should include mass, daily mass and holy communion in desire. And to help any of you make this hour we will gladly send you free for the asking a little book entitled The Shield of Faith containing prayers for war times. Go all that I have said today. I'm going to summarize now by appealing to my imagination. Picture the Nazis desecrating a Christian church in Germany and turning it into a kind of a temporary hall of Nazi justice. Hitler walks in and he sits down before a very large crucifix of the main order. All the Jews in the neighborhood are dragged in by soldiers to hear their death sentence. After a marked trial they proceed to march out of the Christian church under the guise of the soldiers of the double cross. As Hitler's tending cries out death to have arraigned you. And as he says it. And before the Jews reach the door the figure of Christ on that great cross above the main order. Loosen his hands and his feet from the gibbet. And walks in a blaze of glory down that aisle behind the last Jew. And as he does he turns and says to Hitler. In that case you will want me to. To. Someday. Someday we learn that Christ is the savior of all men. God. O Lord Jesus Christ. To win thym mercy here as the prayers of sinners. For both we beseech thee all grace and blessing upon our country and its citizens. We pray in particular for the president. For our Congress. For all our soldiers. For all who depend us in ships whether on the seas or in the skies. For all who are suffering the hardships of war. We pray for all who are in peril or in danger. Bring us all after the troubles of this life into the haven of peace. And reunite us all together for ever O dear lards in thy glorious heavenly kingdom.
